I believe that yoga is a tool. It helps in creating a healthy lifestyle, fixing bodies that are out of whack (from either a chronic illness or day-to-day challenges), and even in boosting a negative mood.
I first tried yoga after developing fibromyalgia. I went from an active, strong individual to someone who had trouble walking relatively short distances. Yoga was one of the first physical activities that I was able to participate in after developing fibromyalgia.
I started with a beginner’s DVD, and had a hard time with some of the most basis postures. Still, after practicing yoga for a while I noticed the pain of fibromyalgia started to dictate my life less. Yoga became my best medicine. Also, those challenging poses became more and more accessible.
That was over 10 years ago. Yoga has become something I love to do, whether it’s at home, in a studio, or even outside. It remains my best medicine, but now I also use it to challenge myself physically and mentally. After practicing for years, I decided to get certified as an instructor through the American Fitness Professionals Association (AFPA). I began teaching in a corporate environment, and I absolutely fell in love with teaching. It’s one of my favorite things in the world. There’s nothing like helping to brighten someone else’s day.
I tend to lead fitness based yoga with a vinyasa flow that combines my deep love of a challenge and lightheartedness with the practice of yoga. I tailor practices to match my students needs and goals. They learn to listen to their bodies, challenge themselves safely, and to use their breath as a powerful tool. I believe that yoga is challenging, fun, and therapeutic.
