Description
Yin Yoga is a cross of Hatha yoga and Chinese Medicine; poses are held lying on the back or seated in a relaxed state for 3 to 5 minutes on average.
Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga with postures or asanas that are held for comparatively long periods of time--five minutes or longer per pose is typical. It was founded and first taught in the United States in the late 1970s by martial arts expert and Taoist yoga teacher Paulie Zink.
Yin Yoga poses apply moderate stress to the connective tissues—the tendons, fascia, and ligaments—with the aim of increasing circulation in the joints and improving flexibility. Yin Yoga poses are also designed to improve the flow of qi, the subtle energy said in Chinese medicine to run through the meridian pathways of the body. Improved flow of qi is hypothesized to improve organ health, immunity, and emotional well-being. Yin Yoga is not intended as a complete practice in itself, but rather as a complementary practice to balance the effects of more active forms of yoga and exercise.
Yin yoga focuses on relaxing, revitalizing the connective tissues, primarily in the lower spine, pelvis and hips to improve range of motion in the joints and stimulate the movement of energy flow of the body through its network of meridians (subtle and deeper pathways used in traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture).
Yin Yoga is a powerful complement to add to your Yoga practice; it has balancing effects and strong benefits for the overall flow of your energy and also enhances any meditation practice.
Yin yoga is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced yoga practitioners.
I’ve had the opportunity to take Linda Stremmel’s Yin Yoga class for the past six months. Linda is a gifted instructor. She is a loving, present guide and leads her students in and out of poses held from two to five minutes while she presents beginner to advanced positions. During longer holds, Linda reads motivational, thought-provoking excerpts from renowned yogis and thinkers. And, as the vibrations of the poses begin to take hold, I find myself living within her readings, as they become a part of my own personal set of intentions. When I first began, I remember how difficult it was to submit to the longer poses and focus on my breath. Now, I find that I have the ability to find comfort in finding my own edge where I mindfully challenge myself. What am I up for today? How can I honor myself by listening to my own body? What do I need to release to the angels today? Each pose focuses on meridians and chakras where pain from heartbreak, stress or trauma lingers. Yin Yoga has given me the ability to stay more present in my every day life. I notice a direct translation in my daily interactions and tasks as they become more manageable and stress-free. One of my favorite feelings of the week is my walk to my car after class. I feel crystal clear, energized and strong. What a gift! - Kimberly Krumholz
